    Blackouts or episodes of loss of consciousness can occur for a numbr of reasons. The most common cause is a vasovagal episode (a simple faint), however other important causes include:

    • Heart rhyhtm disorders
    • Low blood pressure
    • Neurological disorders
    • Blood sugar abnormalities
    • Medications

    To determine the cause of symptoms, Professor Ruparelia will commonly suggest some investigations to determine the cause of symptoms. This usually includes blood tests, ECG, echocardiogram and rhythm monitoring. If symptoms are very intermittent he may suggest longer monitoring.
